This idea suddenly haunted my mind last night while catching up with the new posts here: how about using the names of Chess or Shogi pieces for ranks? I came to this idea because Chess, Shogi and Go are 3 games which where used in the old days to solve differences between 2 ppl. I know for sure that the game Go was used by high-ranked ppl to avoid a possible war, since the game kind of represent a war and its tactics. The game Shogi, which is translated to General's Game btw, was used for this too, and since Chess and Shogi are very much alike, and this is World of WARcraft, I came to this idea

The names of the pieces used in chess are: Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen and King
The names of Shogi-pieces could be used too, they kind of resemble the names though, and from what I read some pieces can even be promoted too (never played Shogi myself, yet

)
Click here for an explaination on Shogi.Names: Pawn, Rook, Bishop, Lance, Knight, Silver General, Gold General, King
But since Rook and Bishop can get promoted to another (not existing yet) piece, and the alternative to Pawn is Soldier (who would like to be a pawn anyway

), perhaps the names could be like this:
Soldier, Lance, Knight, Dragon Horse, Dragon King, Silver General, Gold General, King
(this is my interpretation of the order, I'm not sure though, since I haven't read the whole article yet at the moment of writing)
But this could mean that we don't have an initiate-rank, Dragon Horse does sound a bit too much like an animal, and Dragon King kind of sounds like a higher ranking as king imo, so, I further develop my idea in to:
Apprentice (sry for 'borrowing' ;p)
Soldier (Edit, since I forgot this one, could be left out anyway

)
Lance
Knight
Silver General
Gold General
King
I could have used the Japanese names for the pieces, but since few ppl understand Japanese a bit in our guild, this could get confusing for some, so English names do sound a bit better imho.
This has become a wierd post I guess since I developed my idea further while writing, hope you didn't mind
